This July Nick will have worked for the Department of Child Protection and Family Support (CPFS) for 5 years during this time there have been significant changes in Residential Care.
Child Protection and Family Support have made a financial commitment to changing Residential Care from Hostels, containing 10 beds, to Residential Care Homes, which contain 4 beds. This change enabled the creating of a home like environment where Therapeutic Care to the Young People within the homes could take place. The Department provided a Psychologist who worked in two homes, embedded alongside and assisting the Residential Care Workers to work therapeutically with the Young People. Child protection and Family services decided to implement the Sandra L. Bloom (2005) Sanctuary Model of Organisational Change for Children’s Residential Treatment. In December 2014 Accommodation Services as part of CPFS following a 3 year process became accredited as a Certified Sanctuary Program under the Sanctuary Institute.
About the event
Nick researched Rules, routines and rituals as a system for implementing the Sanctuary Program and discovered they are fundamental to our daily systems of living they give our lives both meaning and purpose. We often don’t acknowledge how important they are until they are disrupted and create dysfunction in the rhythm of our daily life. Following this presentation members will come away with an insight into:
- The unique role and difficulties experienced as a psychologist being embedded with your clients.
- Recent changes that have taken place in the Department of Child Protection and Family Services Residential Care Directorate.
- How Rules, Routines and Rituals can be developed and used as a consistent practical platform to implement theoretical approaches that underpin the operational framework of Residential Care. Further they may well be used as an intervention in family therapy.
